Gold price takes hit as greenback firms

Strong jobs data in the United States, leading to a rebound in the greenback has seen the gold price pulled back as much as $80 an ounce after powering beyond the 1200 an ounce mark last week.

After a month of successive all time highs, gold succumbed to a sell off driven by better than expected US employment data, which pushed the U.S. dollar higher.

As the dollar strengthens, gold prices continue to fall. Just a few weeks ago, gold price has hit new highs in excess of $1200 per ounce, but now gold bugs are worried the yellow metal might slip below $1100 per ounce, if not lower.

Iraq struck deals with consortiums led by energy giants Shell and CNPC over massive southern oil fields Friday, part of a two-day auction that seeks to dramatically boost the country's crude output. The successful bids from the Anglo-Dutch and Chinese giants kicked off the sale, which aims to catapult Iraq towards the top of the list of the world's oil producers.

The Dollar Holds the Key, Todd Harrison Says

In terms of the markets, the dollar holds the key in 2010, Harrison says. Because this seems obvious to most now, Harrison says the currently tight correlation between the dollar and other asset classes is likely to break down in the coming year

"As we saw last year, the dollar and asset classes can both decline [in tandem] but I don't foresee a scenario where both the dollar and asset classes can rise," he says.
