Britain Parliament Votes Against Military Action in Syria
BBC. British MPs have voted to reject possible military action against the Assad regime in Syria to deter the use of chemical weapons.
A government motion was defeated 285 to 272, a majority of 13 votes.
Prime Minster David Cameron said it was clear Parliament does not want action and "the government will act accordingly".

It effectively rules out British involvement in any US-led strikes against the Assad regime.

And it comes as blow to the authority of David Cameron, who had already watered down a government motion proposing military action, in response to the opposition Labour Party's demands for more evidence of Assad's guilt.

Labour had seen its own amendment - calling for "compelling" evidence - rejected by MPs by 114 votes.

But - in an unexpected turn of events - MPs also rejected the government's motion in support of military action in Syria if it was supported by evidence from United Nations weapons inspectors, who are investigating claims President Bashar al-Assad's regime had used chemical weapons against civilians.

Syria denies allegations it used chemical weapons on civilians in a Damascus suburb and announces it will allow United Nations chemical weapons inspectors to visit Ghouta.

Did Syria use chemical weapons on its own people?

In Beirut, Syria's Information Minister had this to say about the allegations: Omran Zoabi.

[Omran Zoabi, Syria's Information Minister]:
"We said from the first second and we are saying it again that we have never used—not in Ghouta, nor anywhere else in Syria—chemical weapons in any shape or form—liquid, gas or otherwise. We have not done this in the past, the present, nor will we in the future. This is the definitive position for the Syrian leadership in this subject."

Zoabi acknowledged that chemical agents have been used in Syria—but not by the government.

"We know who used these weapons—armed terrorist groups. We have evidence and information and there is satellite imagery that Russia mentioned. People are suffering and they are witnesses."

His remarks come on the same day the governments says it is allowing UN inspectors to visit the Damascus suburb where the attacks are believed to have taken place.

The announcement was made on state television. It isn't clear at this point how soon the inspectors will be on the ground.

From what John Kerry just said it sounds clear what stance the US government is going to take. This is clearly another Iraq except that I believe there will be big consequences if the US attack Syria. Start getting well prepared because this one is going to blow up way out of proportion. The World is on the verge of a Thermonuclear WW3 in Syria

US President Barack Obama is reported to be reviewing a response to an alleged chemical "massacre" in Syria.

Obama is under mounting pressure to act following reports of a massive chemical attack near Damascus on Wednesday that opposition groups say was carried out by President Bashar al-Assad's forces and had killed as many as 1,300 people.

While Obama is considering his options UN official was pressing Damascus for an investigation into the allegations.

The Syrian government has strongly denied those allegations, but has yet to accede to demands that UN inspectors already in the country be allowed to visit the sites of the alleged attacks.

"An army unit is surrounding a sector of Jobar where terrorists used chemical weapons," the state broadcaster said today, adding that soldiers who tried to enter the neighbourhood had "suffocated''.

As Defence Secretary Chuck suggested the US Navy was moving forces closer to Syria, Obama met his top national security advisors to discuss the response to the alleged use of chemical weapons, a White House official said.

"We have a range of options available, and we are going to act very deliberately so that we're making decisions consistent with our national interest as well as our assessment of what can advance our objectives in Syria," the official said.

On Friday, Hagel said his department "has a responsibility to provide the president with options for all contingencies," which includes "positioning our forces...to be able to carry out different options - whatever the president might choose."

But he declined to provide any details on the deployment of those forces, as the Obama administration reportedly contemplated cruise missile strikes against Assad's forces.

The New York Times cited a senior administration official as saying Washington was looking at NATO's air war over Kosovo in 1999 as a blueprint for strikes on Syria without a UN mandate.

Obama had repeatedly warned that the use of chemical weapons by Syrian forces was a "red line" that could bring about a more strident Western response to the 29-month-old civil war.

But he has also said Washington must be wary of costly and difficult foreign interventions.

Damascus ally Iran blamed the rebels and warned the West against any military intervention.

"There is proof terrorist groups carried out this action," foreign ministry spokesman Abbas Araqchi said, without giving any details.

Warning against any Western military intervention in the conflict, Araqchi said "there is no international authorisation for" such action.

Meanwhile, UN Under Secretary General Angela Kane was in Damascus, tasked by Secretary General Ban Ki-moon with establishing the terms of an inquiry.

Ban is determined to "conduct a thorough, impartial and prompt investigation" into the chemical attack claims, his spokesman said.

In statements published today, German Chancellor Angela Merkel accused Russia and China of having blocked a UN text demanding the inspectors be given unfettered access.

One year ago, Obama warned the use of chemical weapons in Syria would cross a "red line" and have "enormous consequences".

The United Nations says more than 100,000 people have been killed in Syria since an uprising against Assad's rule flared in March 2011, while millions more have fled the country or been internally displaced.

The violence continued Saturday, with a watchdog accusing the regime of striking by air several rebel positions, including in Jobar, and reporting that insurgents seized a strategic town in the northwest.

State television said an army unit was surrounding a "sector of Jobar where terrorists used chemical weapons," adding that soldiers who tried to enter the neighbourhood had "suffocated."

Rebels have "resorted to chemical weapons after the successes of the Syrian army in recent days," the television charged.

Syria agreed on Sunday to let the United Nations inspect the site of a suspected chemical weapons attack, but a U.S. official said such an offer was "too late to be credible" and Washington was all but certain the government had gassed its own people.
