10/3/13 - Conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh dug into controversial comments made by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) on Wednesday in response to a question from CNN reporter Dana Bash. Reid called Bash "irresponsible" and "reckless" after asking if the Senate would pass a special bill to restore funding to the National Institutes of Health amid a government shutdown. Limbaugh asserted that Bash, who was sympathetic to Reid's position, was made less so by the senator's comment.

"The House is presumably going to pass a bill that funds at least the NIH. Given what you've said, will you at least pass that?" Bash asked in the question which set Reid off. "And if not, aren't you playing the same political games that Republicans are?"

"Even in her question, she savaged the Republicans," Limbaugh said. "The premise is that Republicans were playing political games with the lives of children. How much more biased could you get?"

"The media tells everybody that it's the Republicans who have no heart, it's the Republicans who hate women -- war on women, kids, minorities, you name it -- it's the Republicans who are trying to fund these programs after the Democrats shut this whole process down," Limbaugh insisted.

He played a clip of Reid telling liberal radio host Bill Press that the trap the GOP had set for him was to fund every aspect of the government separately in order to remove funding from the Affordable Care Act.

"This is a mean, vindictive, partisan little man," Limbaugh declared.

Stossel also pointed to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and said that 93 percent of those employees were not necessary "for at least a year."

The Fox Business host asked viewers to tune into his to his show so he could show them "how this could be a good thing, how with less government, people are freer because we have more, we'll create the jobs and we'll invent the good things."

President Obama To Wall Street: "You Should Be Scared"

A self-described "exasperated" President Barack Obama told Wall Street CEOs on Wednesday that they should not take for granted that the Republican-led House of Representatives will raise the nation's debt ceiling by Oct. 17.

"I think this time is different," the president said, when asked by CNBC's John Harwood whether the financial markets were right to assume that the upcoming conflict would ultimately get resolved in time. "I think they should be concerned."

Speaking less than two hours before he was set to meet with congressional leadership to discuss both the debt ceiling and a way out of the current impasse over the government shutdown, the president argued that he had already sacrificed a lot during these negotiations, having agreed to fund the government at sequestration levels. And while he said would be willing to consider changes to his health care law -- a key demand of House Republicans --- he refused to do it during the fight over the shutdown or debt limit.

"I have bent over backwards to work with the Republican Party, and have purposely kept my rhetoric down," he said.

On a macro level, the president stressed that one of the reasons he could not bend much further was that it would forever institutionalize the concept of governing by hostage taking: What we're debating right now is keeping the government open for two months. We would then be going through this exact same thing in the middle of Christmas shopping season, which I don't think many businesses would be interested in. We saw what happened in 2011. And then we'd have to go through it again six months from now and six months after that. And one thing that I know the American people are tired of, and I have to assume the vast majority of businesses are tired of, is this constant governing from crisis to crisis. So in that sense, do we need to break that fever? Absolutely. We have to stop doing that. Let's get a budget that allows people to plan over the long term that allows us to deal with our fiscal problems in a sensible, reasonable way. Even on an issue like health care, if they want to give me specific suggestions around how we can improve delivery of health insurance to people who need it, people with preexisting conditions, I'm happy to talk to them about it. But I'm not going to do it subject to the threat that somehow America defaults on its obligations.

On a more substantive matter, the president didn't formally rule out the idea of trading entitlement reforms for spending increases as a part of broader budget talks (should they ever occur). Instead, he sidestepped Harwood's question. Obama said that he would not raise tax rates on individual income, but he stressed that he would like to raise revenue through tax reform to pay for some economic stimulus, such as infrastructure spending.

From Socialism to Capitalism: U.S. Investment in the Russian Market Economy - George Soros (1998)

The conversion of the world's largest state-controlled economy into a market-oriented economy would have been extraordinarily difficult regardless of the policies chosen. The policies chosen for this difficult transition were (1) liberalization, (2) stabilization, and (3) privatization. These policies were based on the neoliberal "Washington Consensus" of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), World Bank, and U.S. Treasury Department.
The programs of liberalization and stabilization were designed by Yeltsin's deputy prime minister Yegor Gaidar, a 35-year-old liberal economist inclined toward radical reform, and widely known as an advocate of "shock therapy".
The partial results of liberalization (lifting price controls) included worsening already apparent hyperinflation, initially due to monetary overhang and exacerbated after the central bank, an organ under parliament, which was skeptical of Yeltsin's reforms, was short of revenue and printed money to finance its debt. This resulted in the near bankruptcy of much of Russian industry.
The process of liberalization would create winners and losers, depending on how particular industries, classes, age groups, ethnic groups, regions, and other sectors of Russian society were positioned. Some would benefit by the opening of competition; others would suffer. Among the winners were the new class of entrepreneurs and black marketeers that had emerged under Mikhail Gorbachev's perestroika. But liberalizing prices meant that the elderly and others on fixed incomes would suffer a severe drop in living standards, and people would see a lifetime of savings wiped out.
With inflation at double-digit rates per month as a result of printing, macroeconomic stabilization was enacted to curb this trend. Stabilization, also called structural adjustment, is a harsh austerity regime (tight monetary policy and fiscal policy) for the economy in which the government seeks to control inflation. Under the stabilization program, the government let most prices float, raised interest rates to record highs, raised heavy new taxes, sharply cut back on government subsidies to industry and construction, and made massive cuts in state welfare spending. These policies caused widespread hardship as many state enterprises found themselves without orders or financing. A deep credit crunch shut down many industries and brought about a protracted depression.
The rationale of the program was to squeeze the built-in inflationary pressure out of the economy so that producers would begin making sensible decisions about production, pricing and investment instead of chronically overusing resources—a problem that resulted in shortages of consumer goods in the Soviet Union in the 1980s. By letting the market rather than central planners determine prices, product mixes, output levels, and the like, the reformers intended to create an incentive structure in the economy where efficiency and risk would be rewarded and waste and carelessness were punished. Removing the causes of chronic inflation, the reform architects argued, was a precondition for all other reforms: Hyperinflation would wreck both democracy and economic progress, they argued; they also argued that only by stabilizing the state budget could the government proceed to dismantle the Soviet planned economy and create a new capitalist Russia.

During the press conference, a group of hecklers attacked the Republicans hurling insults and saying that the GOP cannot govern the country. "You guys are worthless," one heckler said. "At 1 o'clock last night, we gave them everything that they wanted," declared Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA) as a heckler tore into the GOP. "We gave them the chance to sit down and they turned us down."

This explanation failed to satisfy the hecklers who continued to pepper the Republicans with insults.
