Alan Grayson rant compares Congress to Dog Poop

House Republicans silence Rep. Alan Grayson after he cites poll comparing them to 'dog poop'

Rep. Alan Grayson (D-FL) found himself on Tuesday being added to the list of things that had been shut down because of Republicans in Congress. During a speech on the House floor to call for a vote on a resolution that said Congress' "dignity" had been impugned by the government shutdown, Grayson frustrated Speaker pro tempore Steve Womack (R-AR) by obstructing all other business and asserting privilege under Rule IX. Grayson observed that media outlets all over the world and polling data within in the United States showed that "the dignity of the House has been called into question." The Florida Democrat pointed to a Public Policy Polling survey that found that Congress had an 8 percent approval rating. And to infuriate Republicans further, he read out of the each items that the American people found more likable than Congress. "What do you have a higher opinion of, Congress or witches? Congress, 32 percent; witches, 46 percent," he said. "What do you have a higher opinion of, Congress or hemorrhoids? Congress, 31 percent; hemorrhoids, 53 percent. What do you have a higher opinion of, Congress or dog poop? Congress 40 percent; dog poop 47 percent." At that point, Womack cautioned Grayson to confine his remarks to an explanation of why his resolution was privileged under Rule IX. But the congressman continued citing the poll, comparing Congress to toenail fungus, cockroaches and zombies. "Surely our dignity has been diminished and is actively being called into question," Grayson said. "If we are to be called obstructionists, practicers of partisan petulance, if we are to be called an establishment that is rotten to the core, if we are leaving Americans wondering why there is so much poison in the system then surely our dignity has been diminished. If we're being accused of willingly provoking crises that suspend public services and decrease economic growth then surely our dignity as a body has been diminished."

With that, Womack could stand no more and gaveled for Grayson to suspend his remarks. Grayson argued that he should have been allow to finish his speech as a point of parliamentary order. But Womack ruled in the end that Grayson's resolution was not privileged and scuttled the vote.

There is no single underground economy; there are many. These underground economies are omnipresent, existing in market oriented as well as in centrally planned nations, be they developed or developing. Those engaged in underground activities circumvent, escape or are excluded from the institutional system of rules, rights, regulations and enforcement penalties that govern formal agents engaged in production and exchange. Different types of underground activities are distinguished according to the particular institutional rules that they violate. Five specific underground economies can be identified:
criminal drugs
the illegal economy
the unreported economy
the unrecorded economy
the informal economy
The "illegal economy" consists of the income produced by those economic activities pursued in violation of legal statutes defining the scope of legitimate forms of commerce. Illegal economy participants engage in the production and distribution of prohibited goods and services, such as drug trafficking, arms trafficking, and prostitution.
The "unreported economy" consists of those economic activities that circumvent or evade the institutionally established fiscal rules as codified in the tax code. A summary measure of the unreported economy is the amount of income that should be reported to the tax authority but is not so reported. A complementary measure of the unreported economy is the "tax gap", namely the difference between the amount of tax revenues due the fiscal authority and the amount of tax revenue actually collected. In the U.S. unreported income is estimated to be $2 trillion resulting in a "tax gap" of $450--$500billion.[3][4]
The "unrecorded economy" consists of those economic activities that circumvent the institutional rules that define the reporting requirements of government statistical agencies. A summary measure of the unrecorded economy is the amount of unrecorded income, namely the amount of income that should (under existing rules and conventions) be recorded in national accounting systems (e.g. National Income and Product Accounts) but is not. Unrecorded income is a particular problem in transition countries that switched from a socialist accounting system to UN standard national accounting. New methods have been proposed for estimating the size of the unrecorded (non-observed) economy.[5] But there is still little consensus concerning the size of the unreported economies of transition countries.[6]
The "informal economy" comprises those economic activities that circumvent the costs and are excluded from the benefits and rights incorporated in the laws and administrative rules covering property relationships, commercial licensing, labor contracts, torts, financial credit and social security systems. A summary measure of the informal economy is the income generated by economic agents that operate informally.[7][8] The informal sector is defined as the part of an economy that is not taxed, monitored by any form of government, or included in any gross national product (GNP), unlike the formal economy. In developed countries the informal sector is characterized by unreported employment. This is hidden from the state for tax, social security or labour law purposes but is legal in all other aspects. On the other hand, the term black market can be used in reference to a specific part of the economy in which contraband is traded.

Kitco News speaks with Peter Hug to get his take on the instability going on in the U.S. It is day 8 of the U.S. government shutdown with no settlement between Republicans and Democrats in sight. "The government shutdown is psychologically in the market but it's so minor relative the bigger picture of the debt ceiling negotiations that are coming to a deadline within the next 10 days," Hug says. "If they blow this one, I can't even guess at what this does to the price of the metals. Obviously it's going to be higher, but I can't even quantify what's going to happen." Despite the approaching debt-ceiling limit, Hug says the fundamentals to this market look bearish. With regards to this month's FOMC meeting, Hug says Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke has the perfect out and the shutdown is giving the Fed ammunition to continue its bond-buying program. "My assumption is that this debt ceiling will get extended and it will not have an impact on the credit rating of the United States. If they blow it, I can't quantify what the results are going to be, but it's going to be really negative," Hug adds. "From start to finish what he said about the debt limit is not true," Limbaugh said, sounding almost disgusted. He also used the term "over the top."
"Someone has to go to the microphone and correct this a-sap," he added. "What he just said about the debt limit, is-- well I don't know how to characterize it. It was dead wrong." Later, he said he's "lying" but then backed off.

Limbaugh's issue? He says it's wrong to think that if we don't raise the debt limit the U.S. will default on it's bills.

"It's not even possible, folks," he said, before explaining that the government collects enough revenue to pay our bills, which he characterized as paying the interest on our debt.

"I'm asking myself if we have ever had ... a more dishonest president," he added.

The only way we will default is if Obama refuses to follow the law, which ... could happen," Limbaugh said, citing the way Obamacare has been handled.

"I can't tell you how bad this is. It's beyond my ability without raising my voice and shouting. ... I think it's clear you're not scared enough and so he's out there really trying to scare you."

Just over 30 years ago, 7 people died after ingesting cyanide lasted capsules from within Tylenol Bottles manufactured by Johnson and Johnson.

The narrative put forth by the FBI and Johnson and Johnson through the news media at the time was described as a lone madman traveled from store to store placing the cyanide in the bottles.

But is that what really happened? For the last 2 years, I have been reporting on the investigation and research of Scott Bartz. Bartz is a former Johnson and Johnson employee who claims that the narrative put forth by his employer and the FBI is entirely FALSE.

Last year, on the 30th anniversary of the murders, the FBI carted UNIBOMBER Ted Kazinkski before the cameras again in an attempt to pin the 30 year old cold case on him.

At the same time Bartz released the book, "THE TYLENOL MAFIA: MARKETING, MURDER, AND JOHNSON AND JOHNSON."

A book, I should point out, that Johnson and Johnson doesn't want you to read.

The Bartz's book alleges that he Cyanide was actually placed in the bottles in the supply chain by a Johnson and Johnson employee and not a lone nut traveling store to store. It alleges the FBI, Johnson and Johnson, and the news media colluded to dissuade the public away from Johnson and Johnson's full liability to a lone madman traveling store to store.

Now one year after Johnson and Johnson essentially burned Scott Bartz's book that challenged their narrative of the Tylenol Murders, the FBI has been making phone calls to victims families telling them that they have a big announcement on the 31st anniversary.

Off Grid Self Reliance & Survivalism in Australia's Outback

When he was a teen, Link Knight saw his uncle go bankrupt and vowed to stay out of debt. Years later he moved into what was left of his uncle's old home (a family home from the mid-19th century) in rural southwestern Victoria, Australia. The building was missing walls, filled with junk (his uncle was a hoarder) and not connected to the grid ("Since the power system was privatized in Victoria in the early 90s, it would have cost "over 43,000 dollars to get the power connected").

Link eschewed the large generator that his uncle could never afford to run for a self-installed mix of photovoltaics, propane appliances and low-consuming fixtures (e.g. LED lights). Comparing installing solar to "hanging a picture", he used - for his main system- two 120-watt panels on star pickets connected to a 30 amp charge controller and 2 batteries (for 200 amp hours). He setup a dedicated system for his solar fridge: one 120-watt panel running off 100 amp hours of batteries.

The system is minimal, affordable and, Link argues, proof that there's an alternative to buying your way off-grid. "There's this myth going around that you can't go off the grid cheap, that you need to put in more than 50,000 dollars worth of solar panels in order to live off the grid. I can tell you for a fact it is cheap to set up off grid".

Not all appliances feed off his PV setup. He uses a propane freezer, a camping stove (also propane), a wood-burning stove for heat (in his bedroom) and once a week he turns on his small generator for laundry day.

To maximize his generator time, he runs 3 twin tub washing machines (designed to be used without mains pressurized water, he manually moves the clothes between wash and rinse cycles) and simultaneously runs the pump to the refill the overhead tank that holds his household water supply.

Currently his rainwater catchment system is too small for all his water needs so he has to rely on pays to have his reserves refilled by truck, but he hopes to improve his catchment and avoid this cost in the future.

Right now, he saves 80% of his income and his largest expense is his internet bill (he spends a lot of time posting to his youtube channel), followed by the water bill. He does shop at the supermarket, but he has had tougher times economically when he has relied on foraging for things like native peas, stinging nettle and wild honey and hunting Australia's "national pest"- rabbits (something he can do on foot with his hands).

He admits some things are a bit more complicated, but "there's a lot of ways and means that you essentially end up achieving what you had on-grid anyway".

We can't say Karl Marx didn't warn us: capitalism contains the seeds of its own destruction. In their chase for ever higher profits, the capitalists shed workers for machines. The higher return on capital means that the share of profits rises and the share of wages falls, and soon the mass of the population isn't earning enough to buy the goods capitalism produces. And that's exactly what's been happening over the past four years of the Great Recession: ever increasing income inequality, leading to ever weaker aggregate demand -- temporarily disguised by an unsustainable credit binge -- leading to collapse. You don't have to be a communist to see that this is so. We should all be Marxists now.

Or should we? Every time capitalism hits an inevitable bad patch, Marx's name is invoked with wearisome regularity. But no serious economist or political thinker -- with the possible exception of Gordon Brown -- has ever suggested capitalism can break free of booms and busts. Once bust, as we've seen time and again, the capitalist economy has a robust in-built ability to restore itself. As for all the talk of growing inequality, hasn't anyone noticed that ordinary people in the capitalist West have enjoyed an astonishing long-term rise in their standard of living? We are not suffering an existential economic crisis. We do not need extraordinary remedies. We do not need Marx.

So which is it? Is Marx the voice we should be heeding? Or are his modern day apostles resuscitating a late Victorian corpse whose main contribution to human affairs has been the Soviet gulag?

Pretty good explanation, even though they left a lot out and it's simplified. Variations of this unsustainable debt creation (and the inflation bubbles it feeds) have played out globally in whatever area was more susceptible. For example in Spain, it was housing bubbles, in Iceland, the banks. In Greece its the goverment that went into extreme, unpayable levels of debt.
