Glenn Beck Presents 'Just the Beginning' of Why You Need to Pay Attention to Grover Norquist

10/21/13 - Glenn Beck on Monday began what he said is "just the beginning" of his work to reveal the background and motivations of Grover Norquist, the founder and president of Americans for Tax Reform. Beck began by playing recent clips of Norquist calling out Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) for his efforts to derail Obamacare, noting that while he used to joke about the left's portrayal of Norquist as a "big power player," he's since revised his dismissive opinion in light of the warnings that you "don't ever take this guy on unless you're prepared."

Beck's show Monday primarily concentrated on Norquist's alleged connections to Islamists. He invited Frank Gaffney, the president of the Center for Security Policy, and Daniel Greenfield of the David Horowitz Freedom Center, to weigh in. "[Norquist] is the guy responsible for a lot of the Muslim Brotherhood stuff that goes on in the White House, isn't he?" Beck asked the two.

"Glenn, I think most people who know Grover only as a prominent anti-tax guy in the conservative movement would find that statement unbelievable, and to be honest with you I would've, but for the fact that I saw it first-hand as a result of sharing office space for what I think of seven biblically long years with Grover Norquist," Gaffney remarked. "I saw terrorists in his office space. I had colleagues come to me and say, 'You know there's a Muslim Brotherhood front operating out of his office suite?'" "It was called the Islamic Free Market Foundation, or Institute," Gaffney continued, saying it is more commonly known as simply the Islamic Institute. "This was an operation that was created by a man who's now serving time in federal prison for terrorism by the name Abdurahman Alamoudi."

Gaffney added that at MuslimBrotherhoodInAmerica.com, where viewers can find a ten-part course on the Muslim Brotherhood by the Center for Security Policy, there is a clip of "Norquist at a meeting in Dearborn, Michigan in October 2011 put together between George Soros' progressives or leftists, radicals, and the Islamists."

"[Norquist] talks very candidly about what amounts to an influence operation that he's been running against a prominent conservative Republican Senate leader, and you just can't come away from this with any conclusion other than he knows exactly what he's doing, and what he's doing in this case is advancing the agenda of not just Muslims, but Islamists, and I'm afraid that's the kind of thing that he's got to be held accountable for," Gaffney said. When asked why he would have such connections, Greenfield weighed in: "Well the Muslim Brotherhood, like the communists and the Nazis before them, are experts at setting up front groups with innocuous names and finding people who would be useful to them. Norquist was useful to them, and in some ways, they were useful to him."

Greenfield later added: "If you were a freedom guy, then why would he be backing an ideology associated with a complete totalitarian regime? Why would he be backing the...misfortunes of the conservative movement? And why would he be doing everything possible to undermine the possibility that the Republican Party can back a freedom-based agenda?"

Beck concluded by saying this is a "complex issue," but that it is time that somebody takes on the "establishment Republicans" and tell you "exactly who's who."

"If you're for the Constitution, I don't care if you're a liberal or a Democrat or a Republican and a conservative, I don't really care, if you're for the Constitution of the United States of America," Beck said. "That's our dividing line, and there are too many in the Republican Party, so let's clean out our own house first."

Paul Krugman on Finance ~ End This Depression Now! How to Improve the American Economy (2012)

End This Depression Now! is a non-fiction book by Paul Krugman, an American economist and Nobel laureate. He also writes a twice-weekly op-ed column for The New York Times and a blog named for his 2007 book The Conscience of a Liberal as well as teaches economics at Princeton University. The book is intended for a general audience and was published by W. W. Norton & Company in April 2012. Krugman has presented his book at the London School of Economics,[1] on fora.tv,[2] and elsewhere.[3]

Previous books include The Accidental Theorist, The Conscience of a Liberal, Fuzzy Math, The Great Unraveling, Peddling Prosperity, and two editions of The Return of Depression Economics (both editions being national bestsellers).

Krugman states explicitly in the early sections of the book, But the essential point is that what we really need to get out of this current depression is another burst of government spending. Is it really that simple? Would it really be that easy? Basically, yes.[4]

The author views the book as delivering a call for stimulative expansionary policy and an end to austerity. It points out that existing historical economic data demonstrate: fiscal cuts and austerity measures just deprive the economy of precious funds that can circulate and add to a poor economy. If there is large unemployment, there can not be sufficient consumption. Under poor consumption people are unable to spend and markets cannot thrive. Krugman disputes that although it is necessary to cut debt, it is the worst moment to do so at the time when an economy has just suffered severe financial shocks. It must be done when an economy is full-employed and the private sector can endure the burden of decreased government spending and austerity. Failure to stimulate the economy by public or private sectors will just unnecessarily lengthen the current economic depression and make it worse.[5]

Krugman writes about the anti-recession efforts from the Obama White House that he "personally was more or less tearing my hair out in public as the shape of the administration's plan began to come clear." He describes having "feared that an inadequate stimulus would both fail to produce adequate recovery and undermine the political case for further action", with the enacted Recovery and Reinvestment Act being far too small to respond to the depth of the economic crisis in his view.[4]

He cites the growth of government spending and economic regulations as the U.S. began in its involvement in World War II as key evidence for his argument. He writes, "As military spending created jobs and family incomes rose, consumer spending also picked up (it would eventually be restrained by rationing, but that came later). As businesses saw their sales growing, they also responded by ramping up spending. And just like that, the Depression was over."

Kirkus Reviews published a positive review saying that Krugman "delivers an urgent message on ending the economic crisis." The group's review also referred to the book as an "important contribution to the current study of economics and a reason for hope that effective solutions will be implemented again."[6]

The Ludwig von Mises Institute published a highly critical review in its online journal Mises Daily by David Gordon. Gordon wrote, "The government under Bush and Obama has spent a great deal of money; but, on Krugman's own showing, the economy has failed fully to recover. Does this not give us some reason to think that the Keynesian prescription is inadequate?" He stated that Krugman makes a 'heads I win, tails you lose' argument in which Krugman credits instances that government spending seems to stop economic malaise while instances when government spending seems to fail get hand-waived away since Krugman believes even greater spending would have worked.

Rupert Sheldrake is a biologist and author. He studied natural sciences at Cambridge and philosophy at Harvard, where he was a Frank Knox Fellow. He took a Ph.D. in biochemistry at Cambridge in 1967 and was a Fellow of Clare College, Cambridge, where he was Director of Studies in biochemistry and cell biology until 1973. As a Research Fellow of the Royal Society, he carried out research at Cambridge on the development of plants and the aging of cells. In addition to his numerous books, he is the author of more than fifty papers in scientific journals.

His experiments into unusual and unexplained perceptiveness in humans make a compelling case that intuition, precognition, and telepathy are not paranormal, but are, in fact, normal functions drawn from our biological past.

Rupert Sheldrake, discussed his work on the extended mind and human intuitive abilities including telephone telepathy, and how dogs know their owners are coming home. His telephone telepathy experiment involved having a subject give the experimenters four different friends' phone numbers; then the experimenters randomly chose one of the people to call the subject, who tried to predict which one it would be. In repeated trials, the correct hits averaged around 45%, which was far higher than the 25% chance rate, he detailed. For more on the experiment, see this video report.

Sheldrake suggested that such phenomena may arise out of morphic fields-- intention, thoughts, and memories that extend out past the mind, and can be picked up by others, including animals. His study of dogs that know when their owner is coming home revealed that the pets wait by the window 4% of the time when the owner is not home, and 60% of the time when the owner is about to return. Further, he spoke about an African gray parrot named N'Kisi who seems to demonstrate telepathy, and has a 1,500 word vocabulary. Sheldrake also touched on a disturbing 2008 incident, when a Japanese man knifed him in the leg when he was speaking at a conference. It turned out that the man suffered from mental illness and thought Sheldrake was sending him telepathic messages to kill himself, so he attacked him out of "self defense.

Demonstrators have clashed with police in Rome as tens of thousands of people marched through the city to protest against unemployment, government cuts and construction projects they say take money away from social services.

The protesters turned over rubbish bins in front of the Economy Ministry and set several bins on fire.

Using sticks and clubs, they attacked police in riot gear. The police responded by charging the protesters and chasing them up side streets.

The demonstrators, who infiltrated a mostly peaceful protest, threw smoke bombs, eggs and bottles at the ministry and broke the window of a nearby bank.

Police said 15 of the most violent protesters have been arrested and two policemen have been injured.

In another area along the demonstration route, police defused a large firework with a bullet inside, which they said could have caused serious damage had it gone off.

Protesters also set off smoke bombs and fireworks along the route and many planned to camp out during the night in front of the Infrastructure Ministry.

The protest comes as Prime Minister Enrico Letta tries to hold together his coalition government and struggles to lead Italy out of its worst post-war recession.

Mr Letta's 2014 budget, unveiled on Tuesday, has become a focal point of discontent, with unions complaining about freezes on public sector salaries and what they say is an insufficient easing of the tax burden on workers.

Youth unemployment is at an all-time high in Italy of 40.1%.

Organisers said at least 70,000 people joined the march that started in Piazza San Giovanni on the south side of the city and snaked its way through the city.

Many shops along the route were closed as a precaution.

The mostly young demonstrators held up banners against unemployment, lack of affordable housing and the planned TAV high-speed train link to France.

Opponents of the project say that as well as environmental concerns, the money to build the high-speed train should be used to help the poor and unemployed.

The Council of Economic Advisers (CEA) is an agency within the Executive Office of the President that advises the President of the United States on economic policy. The CEA provides much of the objective empirical research for the White House and prepares the annual Economic Report of the President.

The current Chairman of the CEA is Jason Furman, who was appointed by President Obama on June 10, 2013. One current Member of the CEA is Jim Stock, who was appointed in February 2013 after serving as the agency's Chief Economist. The previous two Chairs, Austan Goolsbee and Christina Romer, resigned their posts in August 2011 and September 2010, respectively to return to positions in academia.

The council's Chairman is nominated by the president and approved by the United States Senate. The Members are appointed by the president. The staff of the council consists of a Chief of Staff as well as about 20 academic economists, plus three permanent economic statisticians.

The council was established by the Employment Act of 1946 to provide presidents with objective economic analysis and advice on the development and implementation of a wide range of domestic and international economic policy issues. In its first seven years the CEA made five technical advances in policy making, including the replacement of a "cyclical model" of the economy by a "growth model," the setting of quantitative targets for the economy, use of the theories of fiscal drag and full-employment budget, recognition of the need for greater flexibility in taxation, and replacement of the notion of unemployment as a structural problem by a realization of a low aggregate demand.[6]
In 1949 a dispute broke out between Chairman Edwin Nourse and member Leon Keyserling. Nourse believed a choice had to be made between "guns or butter" but Keyserling argued that an expanding economy permitted large defense expenditures without sacrificing an increased standard of living. In 1949 Keyserling gained support from powerful Truman advisors Dean Acheson and Clark Clifford. Nourse resigned as chairman, warning about the dangers of budget deficits and increased funding of "wasteful" defense costs. Keyserling succeeded to the chairmanship and influenced Truman's Fair Deal proposals and the economic sections of National Security Council Resolution 68 that, in April 1950, asserted that the larger armed forces America needed would not affect living standards or risk the "transformation of the free character of our economy."[7]
During the 1953-54 recession, the CEA, headed by Arthur Burns deployed non-traditional neo-keynesian interventions, which provided results later called the "steady fifties" wherein many families stayed in the economic "middleclass" with just one family wage-earner. The Eisenhower Administration supported an activist contracyclical approach that helped to establish Keynesianism as a possible bipartisan economic policy for the nation. Especially important in formulating the CEA response to the recession—accelerating public works programs, easing credit, and reducing taxes—were Arthur F. Burns and Neil H. Jacoby.
The 1978 Humphrey-Hawkins Act required each administration to move toward full employment and reasonable price stability within a specific time period. It has had the effect of making the CEA's annual economic report highly political in nature, as well as highly unreliable and inaccurate over the standard two or five year projection periods.

There's a worrying spike in radiation at the Fukushima nuclear plant. Readings from a water storage tank have rocketed six-and-a-half-thousand times higher in two days. A powerful typhoon swept through Japan earlier this week, causing toxic waters to be released into a drainage ditch leading to the Pacific Ocean. Fukushima: Highly Radioactive Water found & More Tanks Leaking Update 10/17/13

High radioactivity found in Fukushima Daiichi well
The operator of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant says that it has detected a sharp rise in radioactivity in a well near a storage tank.
The tank leaked more than 300 tons of contaminated water in August. Some of it is believed to have poured into the sea via a ditch.
Officials of the Tokyo Electric Power Company say that they detected 400,000 becquerels per liter of beta ray-emitting radioactive substances, including strontium, at the well on Thursday.
The level is 6500 times higher than the readings on the previous day.
The well was dug to monitor the impact of the leakage and is located at about 10 meters from the tank.
High levels of radioactive tritium, which tends to be transferred easily in water, had been already detected.
TEPCO officials believe Thursday's findings show that radioactive substances such as strontium, which are transferred relatively slowly, have reached the ground water.
There is another well about 100 meters from the tank near the seaside. It's for pumping up groundwater before it seeps into the reactor building and vicinity so as to contain the increase of contaminated water.
TEPCO will remove the contaminated soil around the tank and continue to closely watch radioactivity levels of the groundwater at the monitoring well.

TEPCO reports another tank leak
The operator of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant says radioactive water has overflowed from a tank storing pumped-up groundwater.
Tokyo Electric Power Company says an employee found water spilling from the top of the tank Thursday morning.
TEPCO says it has stopped drawing up groundwater. The leakage has been contained within a barrier set up around the tank.
The utility says it is investigating how much water spilled from the tank and why. It says a pump used to send the water from the tank to its storage place in the reactor building had stopped due to a diesel generator failure. The pump resumed operation later in the day.
The tank is located on an embankment facing the ocean and near the badly damaged No. 1 and 2 reactors.
TEPCO began pumping up groundwater near the reactors in August to reduce the amount of contaminated water flowing into the sea. The groundwater flows from the mountains and becomes tainted as it passes through the plant premises.

Fishing cooperatives in Fukushima Prefecture will voluntarily check their hauls for radioactivity before shipment.
The national standard for radiation in marine products is 100 bequerels of cesium per kilogram.
The co-ops have set their own standard of 50 bequerels per kilogram and say that only fish below that level will be shipped to markets.
They say that they will dispose of all of a day's catch of a particular species if they detect radiation exceeding their limit.
The co-ops say that so far levels in the species they checked have been under 50 bequerels or undetectable.
But according to the government's Fisheries Agency results released this month, some bottom-dwelling fish such as flounder and cod off Fukushima Prefecture still have radiation levels higher than 100 bequerels per kilogram.

In 1989, the United States invaded Panama as part of Operation Just Cause, which involved 25,000 American troops. Gen. Manuel Noriega, head of government of Panama, had been giving military assistance to Contra groups in Nicaragua at the request of the U.S.—which, in exchange, allowed him to continue his drug-trafficking activities—which they had known about since the 1960s.[24][25] When the DEA tried to indict Noriega in 1971, the CIA prevented them from doing so.[24] The CIA, which was then directed by future president George H. W. Bush, provided Noriega with hundreds of thousands of dollars per year as payment for his work in Latin America.[24] However, when CIA pilot Eugene Hasenfus was shot down over Nicaragua by the Sandinistas, documents aboard the plane revealed many of the CIA's activities in Latin America, and the CIA's connections with Noriega became a public relations "liability" for the U.S. government, which finally allowed the DEA to indict him for drug trafficking, after decades of allowing his drug operations to proceed unchecked.[24] Operation Just Cause, whose ostensible purpose was to capture Noriega, pushed the former Panamanian leader into the Papal Nuncio where he surrendered to U.S. authorities. His trial took place in Miami, where he was sentenced to 45 years in prison.[24]
Noriega's prison sentence was reduced from 30 years to 17 years for good behavior.[26] After serving 17 years in detention and imprisonment, his prison sentence ended on September 9, 2007.[27] He was held under U.S. custody before being extradited to French custody where he was sentenced to 7 years for laundering money from Colombian drug cartels.[28]

The CIA, in spite of objections from the Drug Enforcement Administration, allowed at least one ton of nearly pure cocaine to be shipped into Miami International Airport. The CIA claimed to have done this as a way of gathering information about Colombian drug cartels, but the cocaine ended up being sold on the street.[29]
In November 1993, the former head of the DEA, Robert C. Bonner appeared on 60 Minutes and criticized the CIA for allowing several tons of pure cocaine to be smuggled into the U.S. via Venezuela without first notifying and securing the approval of the DEA.[30]
In November 1996, a Miami grand jury indicted former Venezuelan anti-narcotics chief and longtime CIA asset, General Ramon Guillen Davila, who was smuggling many tons of cocaine into the United States from a Venezuelan warehouse owned by the CIA. In his trial defense, Guillen claimed that all of his drug smuggling operations were approved by the CIA.
