Brazil had strong words for the United States on Monday and summoned the U.S. ambassador for explanations, after new allegations surfaced that Washington spied on President Dilma Rousseff.

A Brazilian news program reported last Sunday that the U.S. National Security Agency spied on emails, phone calls and text messages of Rousseff and Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto.

Newly-appointed Foreign Minister Luiz Alberto Figueiredo, says he expressed his concern to the U.S. Ambassador in Brazil.

[Luiz Alberto Figueiredo Machado, Brazil's Minister of Foreign Relations]:
"Today at nine this morning we summoned the ambassador of the United States, Thomas Shannon to my cabinet, and explained the indignation of the Brazilian government in light of the facts revealed by these documents. The violation of communications of our Lady President of the Republic, from our point of view this represents an impermissible and unacceptable violation of Brazilian sovereignty."

The Brazilian government is already smarting from earlier reports, that the NSA spied on the emails and phone calls of its citizens.

Brazil has given the U.S. government until the end of the week to provide a written explanation of the new spying disclosures.

"American ambassador Thomas Shannon has committed himself to getting in contact with the White House today to relay our conversation, and like I said to him, they need to send us the formal written explanation this situation requires."

Last month, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry urged Brazil not to let spying revelations derail growing trade, diplomatic and cultural relations, between the two largest economies in the Americas.

New CNN Documentary Details Mystery of Missing 9-11 Flag

The missing flag has gotten some media coverage in the past, but the mystery surrounding it is back in the spotlight thanks to a new CNN documentary titled The Flag set to air this week. As the story goes, a flag believed to be the same one in that photo toured the nation and flew proudly at Yankee Stadium and the USS Roosevelt, but it was soon discovered that the flag was not the same size as the one in the photo, and therefore could not have been the same one. There was a time when a University degree assured you a of good job, good pay and a comfortable life.  Not any more.  Today, the unemployment rate for young people in this country is close to 15% – double that of the general population.  But the real crisis is the increasing number of university and college grads who are underemployed – scraping by on low-paid, part-time jobs that don’t require a degree.  Although there are no official statistics in Canada, it’s estimated that after graduating, one in three 25 to 29 year olds with a college or university degree ends up in a low-skilled job.  And to make things worse, 60% graduate with an average debt of $27,000.  Mired in debt, and working in dead end jobs, their launch into adulthood is being curtailed.  Some call them “the lost generation”.  But, it’s not only young people who may be lost.  If the next generation fails to gain a toehold into the economy, who’ll buy boomer’s houses?  Who’ll pay for social programs? Youth unemployment and underemployment is a ticking time bomb with serious consequences for everyone.




There was a time, when working at Eatons was considered a career. Working at a GM plant in Detroit was considered a career. Middle class was achievable through such means, and such workers made up the bulk of the middle class.

What truly pulled the United States out of the Great Depression, for better or worse, was manufacturing for the war effort. Early post war Canada/US economies were not "service economies".

When you create a service economy, you are almost, by default, making higher education mandatory.

This in itself has some immediately noticeable effects: Depreciating the value of higher education, lowering the standards of higher education, turning institutions of "higher learning" into "assembly lines" (making them in turn into corporations).

Large swaths of "highly educated" (arguable) people, with unrealistic expectations, a mountain of debt, a sense of entitlement, competing over fewer and fewer jobs. It is a recipe for, I won't go as far to say "disaster", but definitely, a recipe for large amounts of "disgruntlement", and potential "disenchantment".

The "American dream", "hoodwinked" people into believeing that there is no such thing as "class". This has two immediately noticeable effects:, first and foremost, the individual by default takes the blame (or reward) for everything. Since it is all "in your hands", you have no one to blame but yourself. Not that the "blame game" serves any purpose, but a recognition of what makes up a problem, is absolutely necesary if one chooses to do something about.

Obama Will Bomb Syria Without Congress

President Obama apparently is leaving the door open to moving ahead with a military strike on Syria even if Congress votes against it, adding to the confusion over the president's evolving position.

The president, in a surprise decision Saturday, announced he would seek a vote in Congress on launching a military attack against the Assad regime.

One senior State Department official, though, told Fox News that the president's goal to take military action will indeed be carried out, regardless of whether Congress votes to approve the use of force.

Other senior administration officials said Obama is merely leaving the door open to that possibility. They say he would prefer that Congress approve a military attack on the Assad regime, in response to its alleged use of chemical weapons, and will wait to see what Congress does before making any final decisions on authorizing military force.
