1 Countdown to US default looms
A halt of US government operations would drag the world's biggest economy closer to bankruptcy, something unprecedented in US history. If no budget deal is done, the US would bump up against their "debt ceiling" and run out of money by October 17. By then, the US government would have less than $30 billion cash on hand, Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew has calculated.

2 Hundreds of thousands of federal employees on furlough
A one-time layoff of 800,000 people working for the US government would erode the earlier projected economic growth of 2.5 percent for the fourth quarter of 2013 by about 0.32 percentage points, according to a forecast by Mark Zandi, chief economist and co-founder of Moody's Analytics. That projection assumes a two-week shutdown. If it drags into a whole month, the loss of GDP would rise to 1.4 percentage points.

3 Troops' paychecks stopped
About 1.4 million military active-duty personnel would keep on working, but with their paychecks delayed. Approval for troops' paychecks is dependent on Obama's proposed 2014 federal budget being passed by Congress.

4 Women and children's nutrition program threatened
Pregnant women and new moms who are poor and facing "nutrition risk" won't be able to buy healthy food, as a looming shutdown would put bracers on the $6 billion Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women Infants and Children (WIC).

5 $85 billion in cuts to federal programs
When a shutdown was last threatened in March 2013, it would have resulted in $85 billion in automatic cuts in spending on federal programs -- many aimed at alleviating social hardship. The cuts, known as sequestration, would affect grants to local organizations and funds that keep those programs running.

6 Housing loans halted
US federal programs that provide for about 30 percent of all new loans in the housing market -- a backbone of the country's economy -- will be shut down. Government funding of new businesses will also be halted, as well as workplace health and safety inspections.

7 Trade talks scuppered?
US plans to have a Pacific trade deal, the Trans Pacific Partnership, signed with the US's Asian partners could stall, as Obama may decide not to travel to this weekend's Bali, Indonesia meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation nations. While he could still go if no deal is done by then, it could be a gift for his Republican opponents if Obama was seen to be jetting off to a tropical paradise at a time when federal employees were sent home without pay.

8 Visa delays likely
Thousands of Americans may not be able to get passports for foreign travel, and tourists travelling to the US will likely face delays in visa processing. During the last government shutdown in 1996-97, some 20,000-30,000 applications remained unprocessed daily.

9 Space program on hold
Space agency NASA will be hit the most, as the agency will need to furlough about 97 percent of its employees, though it will continue to keep workers at Mission Control in Houston and elsewhere to support the International Space Station, where the two NASA astronauts currently on board, Michael Hopkins and Karen Nyberg, may not know whether they have jobs to come back to.

Dark Pools: Flash Orders, High Frequency Trading and Other Financial Market Issues (2009)

In finance, dark pools of liquidity (also referred to as dark liquidity or simply dark pools or black pools) is trading volume or liquidity that is not openly available to the public.[1] The bulk of these represent large trades by financial institutions that are offered away from public exchanges so that trades are anonymous. The fragmentation of financial trading venues and electronic trading has allowed dark pools to be created, and they are normally accessed through crossing networks or directly between market participants.
One of the main advantages for institutional investors in using dark pools is for buying or selling large blocks of securities without showing their hand to others and thus avoiding market impact as neither the size of the trade nor the identity are revealed until the trade is filled. However, it also means that some market participants are disadvantaged as they cannot see the trades before they are executed; prices are agreed upon by participants in the dark pools, so the market becomes no longer transparent.[2]
There are three major types of dark pools. The first type is independent companies set up to offer a unique differentiated basis for trading. The second type is broker-owned dark pools where clients of the broker interact, most commonly with other clients of the broker (possibly including its own proprietary traders) in conditions of anonymity. Finally, some public exchanges are creating their own dark pools to allow their clients the benefits of anonymity and non-display of orders while offering an exchange "infrastructure". Depending on the precise way in which a "dark" pool operates and interacts with other venues it may be considered, and indeed referred to by some vendors as a "grey" pool.

Whilst it is safe to say that trading on a dark venue will reduce market impact, it is very unlikely to reduce it to zero. In particular the liquidity that crosses when there is a transaction has to come from somewhere—and at least some of it is likely to come from the public market, as automated broker systems intercept market-bound orders and instead cross them with the buyer/seller. This disappearance of the opposite side liquidity as it trades with the buyer/seller and leaves the market will cause impact. In addition, the order will slow down the market movement in the direction favorable to the buyer/seller and speed it up in the unfavourable direction. The market impact of the hidden liquidity is greatest when all of the public liquidity has a chance to cross with the user and least when the user is able to cross with ONLY other hidden liquidity that is also not represented on the market. In other words, the user has a tradeoff: reduce the speed of execution by crossing with only dark liquidity or increase it and increase his market impact.

One potential problem with crossing networks is the so-called winner's curse. Fulfillment of an order implies that the seller actually had more liquidity behind their order than the buyer. If the seller was making many small orders across a long period of time, this would not be relevant. However, when large volumes are being traded, it can be assumed that the other side—being even larger—has the power to cause market impact and thus push the price against the buyer. Paradoxically, the fulfillment of a large order is actually an indicator that the buyer would have benefitted from not placing the order to begin with—he or she would have been better off waiting for the seller's market impact, and then purchasing at the new price.

Rush Limbaugh Bashes 'Journalistic Malpractice' Attacking GOP Over Gov't Shutdown

9/30/13 - Rush Limbaugh took the media to task Monday for foisting all the blame of a potential government shutdown on Republicans. He mocked pieces like The Washington Post's "You will no longer be able to watch this baby panda online if the government shuts down" and this Associated Press articlefor basically saying Republicans want a shutdown and "hate the zoo" and all the rest of it.

Limbaugh predicted in the next few days the media would write piece after piece about all the programs getting shut down during the shutdown and blaming Republican intransigence on the whole thing. He referred to the AP article above as "basically a press release from the Democrat party" that accuses Republicans of hating Obama so much they're willing to let millions of people go without health care.

"It's just flat-out journalistic malpractice. There is no pretense--there's not even an objective pretense here to portray the Republican position on this anywhere near accurately."

Strange Disappearances/ If JFK Lived - September 29 2013 - Coast to Coast Am

Joining George in the first half, researcher David Paulides shared updates on cases of people who inexplicably disappear from national parks and rural settings. He detailed two disappearances that occurred in similar locations in Roseboro, NC, some 24 years apart. The first case involved a two-year old boy playing with a dog who vanished in 1976. An exhaustive 2-week search with 1,200 people turned up nothing. In the second incident, a boy living with his aunt and uncle, also disappeared and was never found. Paulides outlined similarities in the cases-- both boys vanished while playing with dogs (in the latter case, the dog returned after five days, looking clean and well-fed), both boys came from broken homes, and there was never any evidence of kidnapping or abduction.

Paulides described a case of a missing girl from Bellmawr, NJ who vanished in 1957, also while playing with a dog, near a creek in her backyard. The area near her house was searched five or six times, including an unoccupied home for sale. Yet, when a mother and daughter were viewing the house for sale, the missing girl's dog jumped out of a closet, and the girl's dead body was also there. It was evident, he reported, that the girl and the dog had not been in the location earlier when it was searched. Paulides interviewed a retired special agent from the Park Service who investigated criminal activity in the parks. The Park Service seeks to downplay disappearances-- they don't want the bad publicity, or to have it known just how many people have gone missing, he told him.

In the latter half, author Bryce Zabel talked about his meticulously researched new novel, Surrounded by Enemies: What If Kennedy Survived Dallas?, an alternative narrative of the turbulent 1960s after America's charismatic president escapes unscathed on November 22, 1963. He looked at how the assassination attempt would have shaken things up politically, with JFK and his brother, Attorney General Robert Kennedy striking back at their enemies which included the CIA, J. Edgar Hoover, and even LBJ. Zabel's book also portrays scandals that erupted around JFK's private life as his womanizing and health conditions were revealed to the public.

Covers from a fictitious news magazine are featured in his book, with one of them showing JFK meeting the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan show. There is also a scene where the comedian Lenny Bruce does a monologue about Kennedy's infidelities. If JFK had lived, Zabel believes that the Viet Nam War would have played out much differently. Kennedy "would have been loathe to commit ground troops in any significant number to Viet Nam," he surmised. Asteroid Armageddon: ASTEROID in a NEAR MISS with EARTH - Was NOT DETECTED until NEAR IMPACT

A surprise asteroid which was only spotted by scientists on Friday night narrowly missed the Earth just hours later, flying within the orbit of geostationary satellites.

"[The asteroid] was discovered on Friday night by our station near Lake Baikal and nine hours later it flew within 11,300 kilometers of the Earth surface, below the orbit of geostationary satellites. It was about 15 meters in size," said Vladimir Lipunov of the Moscow State University and the Sternberg Astronomical Institute.

The incident will once again re-ignite debate about the threat posed by near-earth objects and what some claim are inadequate attempts on behalf of governments and space agencies to prepare for them.

In 2029 and again in 2036 a much larger asteroid named Apophis will fly very close to the Earth, potentially disrupting satellites.

There is a one in 250,000 chance that the asteroid will hit the Earth, a threat that has prompted Russia to explore methods of deflecting it.

According to Anatoly Perminov, the head of the Russian's Federal Space Agency, the threat of an impact is somewhat more than remote. He says that a "scientist recently told him" that Apophis may hit Earth in 2032.

Earlier this year, a meteor weighing 10,000 tons broke apart in the Earth's atmosphere above the city of Chelyabinsk in the Urals, causing 1500 injuries.

The unexpected incident caused consternation because it coincided with the fly-by of asteroid 2012 DA14, which was much larger.

The estate tax in the United States is a tax imposed on the transfer of the "taxable estate" of a deceased person, whether such property is transferred via a will, according to the state laws of intestacy or otherwise made as an incident of the death of the owner, such as a transfer of property from an intestate estate or trust, or the payment of certain life insurance benefits or financial account sums to beneficiaries. The estate tax is one part of the Unified Gift and Estate Tax system in the United States. The other part of the system, the gift tax, imposes a tax on transfers of property during a person's life; the gift tax prevents avoidance of the estate tax should a person want to give away his/her estate.
In addition to the federal government, many states also impose an estate tax, with the state version called either an estate tax or an inheritance tax. Opponents of the estate tax call it the "death tax".[1]
If an asset is left to a spouse or a Federally recognized charity, the tax usually does not apply. In addition, up to $5,250,000[2] can be given by an individual, before and/or upon their death, without incurring federal gift or estate taxes.

In the 2006 documentary, The One Percent, Robert Reich commented, "If we continue to reduce the estate tax on the schedule we now have, it means that we are going to have the children of the wealthiest people in this country owning more and more of the assets of this country, and their children as well.... It's unfair; it's unjust; it's absurd."
Proponents further argue that the economic impact of an estate tax should be less disruptive than other types of taxes which directly target economic activity. To lower taxes on earned income while raising taxes on inheritance, for instance, would provide a greater net return on time and effort spent working (excepting, perhaps, instances where the primary motive to work is to pass on wealth and the estate tax is very high). To the extent that an estate tax also increases the incentive to give to charity, rather than to pass wealth to individuals, this is also seen by proponents[citation needed] of the estate tax as a reason to favor it over other taxes.
In response to the concern that the estate tax interferes with a middle-class families' ability to pass on wealth, proponents point out that the estate tax currently affects only estates of considerable size (over $5 million USD, and $10 million USD for couples) and provides numerous credits (including the unified credit) that allow a significant portion of even large estates to escape taxation. Proponents note that abolishing the estate tax will result in tens of billions of dollars being lost annually from the federal budget.[35] Proponents of the estate tax argue that it serves to prevent the perpetuation of wealth, free of tax, in wealthy families and that it is necessary to a system of progressive taxation.[36]
Supporters argue that many large fortunes do not represent taxed income or savings, that wealth is not being taxed but merely the transfer of that wealth, and that many large fortunes represent unrealized capital gains which (because of a step up in basis at the time of death) will never be taxed as capital gains under the federal income tax.[37]
Moreover, some argue that allowing the rich to bequeath unlimited wealth on future generations will disincentivize hard work in those future generations.[35] Winston Churchill argued that estate taxes are "a certain corrective against the development of a race of idle rich". This issue has been referred to as the "Carnegie effect," for Andrew Carnegie. Carnegie once commented, "The parent who leaves his son enormous wealth generally deadens the talents and energies of the son, and tempts him to lead a less useful and less worthy life than he otherwise would'." Research suggests that the more wealth that older people inherit, the more likely they are to leave the labor market.[38] A 2004 report by the Congressional Budget Office found that eliminating the estate tax would reduce charitable giving by 6--12 percent.[39]
Proponents of the estate tax tend to object to characterizations it operates as a double or triple taxation. They point out many of the earnings subject to estate tax were never taxed because they were "unrealized" gains.[37] Others note double and triple taxation is common (through income, property, and sales taxes, for instance) or argue the estate tax should be seen as a single tax on the inheritors of large estates. Proponents consider this argument, like reference to the tax as a "death tax" and claims about the loss of family farms, to be a disingenuous attempt to cloud the issue by individuals wanting to bestow unlimited advantages on their offspring without regard for broader social vitality.
