Argentina renews claim over oil rich Falklands

April 03, 2010 — It has been 28 years since Britain and Argentina went to war over the disputed Falkland islands - known as the Malvinas by Argentines - in the South Atlantic.

Britain emerged victorious from the conflict and the islands have since grown prosperous from tourism and fishing among other things.

Now with oil companies exploring the waters surrounding the islands, tensions between the two countries are rising again.

As Argentina pays tribute to the soldiers who fell in the conflict, many people, including the president, are raising their voices against the continued British rule over the islands.

Lucia Newman reports from Buenos Aires.

  1. British rule is not disputed amongst the islanders, all of whom want to be British.

  2. I dont understand the argentine case that the falklands are theirs, the first people to land on the falklands were the french , the falklands have never been part of the argentine their case seems so weak that they are just aggressive thieves

  3. The islanders want to be British. The Brits won the war with no problem. The Argentinians sent a bunch of kids out to war against one of the greatest fighting forces in the world. The leaders of argentina were put down in disgrace and now oil has come along. The islanders have lived there and there should be no reason for them to move. Americans should stay out of the chit chat. We have no business entering into this mess. Had argentina before the war began played it nice to the Brits they probably would have given the island to them but they chose to invade.

  5. @ Anonymous #3 You FAIL history on that BS. Ever heard of French Exocet Missiles? They sank a few British ships and WOULD HAVE sunk them all if the Argentines had been able to get more in time.

@ Anonymous #4, I hearya. I have a Scottish hatred of "nobility" and despise anyone who bows to it.

  6. It is British Investment that is looking for oil In the Falklands. There is nothing stopping Argentina investing in the oil companies surrounding the Falklands. Even if they owned the Island it is more likely it would be foreign money investing in the infrastructure. There is nothing to stop Argentineans in investing in the shares to participate in the profits if oil is found. If oil is not found it is not their investment that is lost. But if oil is found they want a share of the profits.
