Housing Market Getting Worse Elizabeth Warren on Tech Ticker

Rising U.S. Unemployment Continues to Haunt Housing Market

"We see things getting worse in the housing market," Warren says, citing the pernicious effects of foreclosures, which rose 5% in the third quarter to a total of 937,840, according to RealtyTrac.

"The long-term impact of high foreclosure rates on our housing market and overall economy would be disastrous," Warren warns, citing estimates that 10 to 12 million U.S. homes could ultimately go into foreclosure. "We have to get foreclosures under control."

Wall Street pays record bonuses after US bailout - 14 Oct 09

Barely a year after the Wall Street bailout sparked public outrage and calls for nationalising banks, executives are raking in record-breaking salaries and big banks are posting blockbuster profits.

The windfall is evident in the $140bn in salaries that banks and investment houses are paying their executives. Many of those who
will benefit work for JP Morgan, whose huge third-quarter profit boom helped push the Dow Jones Average over the coveted
10,000 mark for the first time in a year.

Meanwhile, ordinary American workers continue to see sharp pay cuts and the worst joblessness in 20 years. John Terrett reports.

Dollar hits 14-month low against euro

Concerns about the future of the US economy have brought the dollar to its lowest level in 14 months against the euro.

The value of the euro against the dollar increased to 1.4887 from 1.4852 in Asian trade -- the highest level since August 2008.

The American currency also fell to 89.90 yen from 89.67. The euro contracted to 132.36 yen from 133.30.

The losses are blamed for a slow-paced recovery in the world's largest economy.

"I think the euro rose against a backdrop of falling confidence in the US economic recovery," Marito Ueda, a dealer, told AFP.

"Recent US economic data were negative. Job numbers in particular have been slow to recover, disappointing investors," he added.

Is the dollar done as reserve currency? Banks shift to Euros & Yen. Investors to Aussie and loonies Greenback down

Dollar Reaches Breaking Point as Banks Shift Reserve

Oct. 12 (Bloomberg) -- Central banks flush with record reserves are increasingly snubbing dollars in favor of euros and yen, further pressuring the greenback after its biggest two- quarter rout in almost two decades.

Policy makers boosted foreign currency holdings by $413 billion last quarter, the most since at least 2003, to $7.3 trillion, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Nations reporting currency breakdowns put 63 percent of the new cash into euros and yen in April, May and June, the latest Barclays Capital data show. That’s the highest percentage in any quarter with more than an $80 billion increase.

Is gold a commodity or a currency .Gold at $1,500 is inevitable

Gold at $1,500? Don't hold your breath

Is Gold a commodity or a currency? It certainly fits the definition of a commodity: A substance of value, with a uniform quality produced by many different producers.
By Garry White
Published: 6:13PM BST 11 Oct 2009
However, unlike other commodities it has relatively few uses other than as an ornament. Copper is used in wiring, iron is used to manufacture steel but gold's main uses are – and always have been – as a store of value and as a way to demonstrate personal wealth. Even if solid gold bathroom taps are not to your taste, they certainly make a point.

This means that gold really should be considered as a currency – and nothing else. This brings us on to the subject of fiat money.

Fiat currencies are not backed by gold. When most currencies were on the gold standard, a unit of currency could be exchanged by central banks for a fixed weight of gold. That way, paper money could be used instead of using gold or silver coins.

Oil Prices to Remain Inflated but Do not Pass on Gas

Ranked #3 on Forbes' Best Brokerage Analysts for 2009, Oppenheimer Senior Analyst Fadel Gheit sat down with The Energy Report to shed light on existing conditions in the oil and gas sector. In terms of oil prices, "financial players are more in control now than oil companies or OPEC," according to Fadel, who is currently more bullish on gas than on oil. "Despite the fact that gas stocks gained significantly this year," he says, "we think the upside potential remains great."

The Energy Report: Why is there such a high ratio and differential between natural gas and oil right now?

Fadel Gheit: Because oil is a global commodity; gas is a regional commodity. You can have a huge discrepancy in gas prices from country to country, from continent to continent, because of a lack of adequate transportation— the means of shipping to take gas from where it's found in abundance to where it's needed. For example, gas in the Middle East has no value because there is no local market for it. Most of the oil-producing countries actually flare gas because, basically, they use gas, you call it, as a drive. They use gas to pump it back in the oil field instead of water, because they don't have water, so they use natural gas that comes as a co-product with oil to pump it back into the wells to push oil because that's what they want. They want oil; they don't want gas.
